Menopause Hormones and Progesterone Creams

Frequently Asked Questions About Menopause Hormones and Progesterone Cream

Q: What is Progesterone Cream?

A:  Progesterone Cream is a hormone that helps with Menopause.  Progesterone is a steroid hormone that is made by the the corpus luteum of the ovary at ovulation, with smaller amounts by the adrenal glands.  The hormone progesterone is made inside the body from the steroid hormone pregnenolone, and is a precursor to most of the steroid hormones, including cortisol, androstenedione, the estrogens and testosterone.

In a normally cycling female, the corpus luteum produces 20 – 30 mg of progesterone daily during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle

Q:  What is estrogen dominance?

A:  The phrase “estrogen dominance,” was coined by renowned Dr. Lee.  It is when the normal ratio or balance of estrogen to progesterone is changed by the excess estrogen or inadequate progesterone.  Many people do not realize that estrogen is a potent and potentially dangerous hormone when not correctly balanced by adequate progesterone.

Q:  Why would a pre menopausal woman require progesterone cream.

A:   Ten to fifteen years before menopause, a lot of women regularly havhave anovulatory cycles in which they make enough estrogen to create menstruation, but they don’t make any progesterone, which in turn sets the stage for estrogen dominance.  Using a high quality progesterone cream during anovulatory months can assist in preventing some of the unwanted symptoms of PMS.
PMS may occur even if you have normal progesterone level when stress is a factor.  Cortisol production increases when stress is involved.    In the event that stress is a factor, additional progesterone is needed to overcome this blockage.  Stress management is important.

Q:  What is progesterone made from?

A:  A More Natural Approach to Hormone Balance — FemBasis Progesterone Creams have been carefully researched and formulated to provide an optimum availability of United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Micronized Natural Progesterone derived from wild yam root. Rather than use a commonly available skin cream base, as some others have done, FemBasis Progesterone Creams are chemical free and are uniquely blended with organic plant based nutrients and vitamins that are sourced, whenever possible, from Non-GMO alternatives. We are very proud of what we don’t have in our Progesterone Creams as well

Q:  Where do I put the progesterone cream?

A:  Progesterone cream is very fat-soluble, and it is easily absorbed through the skin.

Q:  Progesterone dosage?

A:  The dosage for premenopausal women is usually between 15-24 mg/day for 14 days before expected menses, stopping the day or so before menses.

For post menopausal women, the doge that often works well is 15 mg/day for 25 days of the calendar month.

Q:  What amount of progesterone do you recommend in a cream?

A:  Dr. Lee recommends the cream that contain 450-500 mg of progesterone per ounce, which is 1.6% by weight or 3% volume.  This means that about one quarter teaspoon daily would provide about 20 mg/day.

Q:  Is progesterone cream safe?

A:  Progesterone cream is very safe.  During the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, the placenta produces around 300 mg of progesterone daily, which would mean that a one-time overdose of the cream is pretty much impossible.  If you were to use the whole jar at once it might make you a little sleepy.  With that being said, Dr. Lee recommends that women avoid using higher than the recommended dosage to avoid hormone imbalances.

Q:  Why would you use a progesterone cream instead of taking a progesterone pill?

A:  The answer to that is very simple.  80% to 90% of an oral dose is lost through the liver.  At least 200 to 400 mg daily is needed orally to achieve a physiologic dose of 15 to 24 mg daily.  Such high doses will create undesirable metabolites and unnecessarily overload the liver.
