Mayo Clinic defines menopause as 12 months after your last period.
Hormonal changes can start years before, which is known as perimenopause. Perimenopause starts when your ovaries cut back on production of female hormones, estrogen & progesterone, & your ovaries release eggs less often.
As our population ages, the number of postmenopausal women grows. In 1998, there was over 477 million postmenopausal women in the world. That number is expected to rise to 1.1 billion by 2025.
Sometimes menopause occurs sooner than normal. Women receiving cancer treatment may experience early menopause. The reason you might experience early menopause during cancer treatment is because chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone therapies can interfere with hormone levels.
Another reason for early menopause is surgical removal of ovaries. Smoking may also cause early menopause. The cause of early menopause is not always clear.
Quality of life
Menopause is a natural occurrence in a woman's life. For most women, going through menopause has no change in life quality and there is no need for medical intervention. One study with menopausal women showed that 80% of these women experienced no chance in their quality of life. 62% actually felt positive about it. About 10% experienced mood swings, hot flashes/night sweats, felt tired and irritable and were miserable during this phase of their lives. These symptoms are reversible though. Menopause and sexuality. One study showed 75% of women did not feel attractive. Many women also found sex more enjoyable. Menopause changes can affect women sexuality. Lower levels of estrogen & progesterone can interfere with your sex drive. Menopause can also make the skin around your vagina thinner and drier.
Symptoms of menopause:
- Hot Flashes
- Sleep disturbances
- Vaginal discomfort
- Feel less attractive
- Urinary incontinence
- Mood changes
- Metabolism changes
- Anxiety... Just to name a few.
